Why is the Subway called 'The Subway'?

Well here we are again. Dad this time. It is Friday night in New York. Chickybabe has been sick. She got sick yesterday and felt pretty awful by the end of the day. She had a bad night and felt pretty ordinary this morning. She stayed in bed until early afternoon and then feeling a bit better caught a cab to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

I left around 10am to go to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. So off I trot to the subway to catch the "1" train (1 is the route) to the end of the line. I pick a nice window seat thinking that I'll get a nice look at the bottom half of Manhattan while I am travelling down to South Ferry Station. The train pulls put of the station and then I remember why they call it the subway. Some view. Duh!!!

I think today must have been the coldest New York day ever. Especially when you take the 'wind chill factor' into account. I have never been so cold in my life. I was absolutely freezing and when the wind came up 'freeze' went to a whole new level. I wish I had read some books about the Arctic or Antartica so I could have some vocabulary to help you understand how cold it was. I am talking COLD!!!!!!

Anyway the Statue of Liberty was pretty cool (aside from the fact that it was outside). I mean, fair dinkum, who put it outside?? New meaning to the phrase, 'I got some cool photos'. Liberty Island (home of the statue) and Ellis Island are both out in the middle of the bay. No where to hide from the wind. BBBBBRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!

Needless to say I really enjoyed the outing. Since I had the camera (and you may remember our first night out in New York we left the camera in the hotel) with me, I decided that when I got off the train at 50th and Broadway (see I even speal like a New Yorker) I decided to go back to the Rockerfella Center and get a photograph of the Christmas tree. Then I decided to go to the Top of the Rock (observation deck at the top of the center) 70 floors up. I got up there just as the sun went down. You know what happens when the sun goes down. Yep, it gets colder. I'm shivering now just thinking about it. The wind was merciless. I thought my fingers, ears and nose were going to fall off. Anyway I took some pictures (and you had better like them when you see them) then saved myself and got back to the hotel as fast as possible. Feeling has been slowly returning. I am able to use two fingers typing now (don't get smart - I usually use three). I can hear now and my nose is tingling - I think that's a sign of life.

We leave tomorrow to head over to Idaho to the Hamptons and the twins. There seems to be snow everywhere but where we are. Maybe that will change next week.

Hope you are all well.

Love Dad xoxoxoxox

  1. Hey, nice blog entry! I was reading this thinking.."did they actually split up, and was Dad actually running around New York by himself?!!" You've come a long way dad, you're talking the lingo and everything! Your pretty much a resident. Hope you're feeling better Mum. I would hate to be sick on holidays, but then if it keeps you inside and out of the Iceage, then maybe that's not such a bad thing! I can't wait to see some photos! Hope you get to Idaho safely, and have a great time there!

    Love Jonny Jessima and Jenna!

  6. LOL dad I've been laughing out loud throughout your blog, it sounds like it was pretty cold! Scientists must be wrong about global warming. I'm sorry to hear that Mama is sick!! That's awful being on holidays and being sick - I'm glad she managed to make it to the art museum - and that you split up for that outing :)

Things that made me laugh out loud:
You picked a window seat on the subway so you could enjoy the view.
You trying to describe a new level of 'cold'.
Wondering who put the Statue of Liberty outside ('The French!' says Tammy).
Your evening ascent to the Top of the Rock description.
When I realised you ventured out in New York City without Mum - that is so brave for you Dad!!

I'm glad that you can feel some parts of your face now :) I'm also grateful that you went back and got some photos of the Rockerfella Center!!!

I hope Mum feels better soon, and that you have a safe and fun trip back to Idaho!!!

Can't wait to hear the next installment!!! :)

    Love Abby xoxox

  7. It was cold, I even had to pull out my mittens. :) Justin wishes he didn't have to work that day so he could have been your tourist companion. I was just glad that the boys were starting to feel better.
