Bethany was visiting her boyfriend, Robbie, down in Melbourne recently when a freak hailstorm and flash-flood hit the city. After hailstones the size of golf balls shredded the leaves off the trees, heavy rain turned the city streets into rivers within minutes. It was a warm day, so the ice melted almost immediately, but it made the waters very cold, and you can still see ice floating in some of the photos. News pictures showed people kayaking in the streets and cars and bins etc. being swept away. It is quite amazing to see how quickly the waters rose. If you look at the two short videos they took on Bethy's camera you can see the water rise across the two streets right before your eyes! - Bethy - a true child of her mother - loved the storm of course. The subways were too flooded to be in use so it did take them a while to get home. But they had fun.

I went to Melbourne once and it really was 'four seasons in a day.'
ReplyDeleteI'm glad Bethy survived and that she had fun. It's good to see the funny and fun side to life. Hopefully we don't get to see that type of freak storm, but if we do, then lets embrace it :) At the same time, I would hope we were in safe places and our homes prepared for it!
Oh my goodness - your weather's actually worse than ours! I can't believe that flood with the floating ice. We're enjoying 65 degrees and sunshine.
ReplyDeleteHa Ha! I lived in Victoria for 4 years and most of the state is like that - but particularly Melbourne :) Im glad Robbie and Bethy had such a great time :)
ReplyDeleteI went to Melbourne once and it was the same season all day! Very dissapointing (sigh). I'm sorry you weren't there, Mum - it sounds like the kind of storm you would have really loved :) Love you xoxox
ReplyDeleteOh sorry! That last post was me (Abby) - I'm on your computer and I forgot to change users :p love you xo
ReplyDeleteHuh! Just realized I hadn't commented on this post. I thought I had!

I just realised that I haven't commented on this post either! And after being such a big contributer! :)
ReplyDeleteThat storm was so much fun! And I lost my thongs in a flowing street-river. And we were absolutely drenched by the end of it (those photos/videos were taken at the beginning when it first started) and we couldn't get home for hours because all the trains were out of order! (We did however enjoy walking the streets and drinking hot chocolate while we waited). Aaahhh good times :)
The only thing I would have done differently would have been to wear non-white/see-through pants that day...
Much love! Beth xox
